The sands of time make it possible for us to name our child the way we want but because in the past some names became popular for both boys and girls today we can chose either name accordingly. In most cultures father’s wanted a son to carry on his name and title but sometimes this just was not possible. The only resource the father had was to name the first born girl a derived of his name. There are many female names born because of this but several come to mind that are most popular yesterday and in society today.
Robert is a name that has been used in many cultures such as Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Norwegian and Swedish speaking countries. In Scotland there have been three kings named Robert, many Saints, and many other positions where the name of Robert was popularized. Along the way some of these great men have had daughters named in their honor giving the girl the name of Roberta which has the same meaning and brings honor to the family. The feminine version has become popular in American society today. Robert Kennedy popularized the name in the sixties causing many people to name their sons Robert and their daughters Roberta. The nickname for this is Bob and usually the girl is called Bobbie.
The name of William has become popular over the centuries not only as a first name but as a surname as well. This name is used very often in English speaking countries and the female version is Williamina. The nickname for William is Bill and for Williamina is Billy. Also a person with the name of William can be called Willie and Williamina is often called Mina. These few popular traditional names are just examples of baby names that are used for both boys and girls.
